Coruption and the Decalogy of Politico ala Ramon-Vargas Machuca

Corruption...you can say that you rarely hear that word. You can say including  that  you  do not want to hear it. But I tell you that even a 5 year boy hears that word and is familiar to it included.

Yes...corruption...is so familiar that every single Indonesian know what it means.

Well, corruption is a global phenomenon. No country under the sun is free from that disease. But what distinguish this global phenomenon from the Indonesian one is that here the corruption is massive and committed by those who ride the luxury and consume the poverty of the people they should represent to. A shameful and humiliating phenomenon.

In relation to this, I would like to share here some ideas of a great political philosophy thinker. His name is Ramon Vargas Machuca Ortega. His 14/11/2008 article entitled 'Decalogo del buen politico' brings us a flash to self consciousness raising. It is like a light in the midnight storm. He said that a politico must have or realize the so-called 'ten teaching/consciousness.' But here I just write three of those ten.

First, politics must be his/her vocation. A politico must see and feel it as a vocation. It is not only a profession. It is rather a vocation and profession all at once. Being politico as vocation means that it is not his/her personal election, it is rather a call, a divine call and invitation to him to offer his/herself in that field. For this, it is highly appreciate the personal consciousness. It is also a profession at the same time because to do this function a politico must be professional that in turn he is called to highly involved in his work.

Second, a politico does not need to be fantastic and fanatic, he should rather be talented and integrated. They mean that a politico brings in his soul, mind and blood the spirit of justice, truthfulness and flawlessness.

Third, a politico does not need to be cynic or irritable he/she rather be positive thinking, proactive and sensitive to all people not just to his//her own.

Guys....., do you find such a politician in this loving country? Tell me....I will bow down before him with a basket of rose.

Thuggery, how do we see it?

The arrest of Jhon Kei has been the headline of some capital mass media these days. But who is Jhon Kei? This name might not be heard for many people before or it might be strange for other, but for the capital police, this name has brought them a special fear and terror. Why?

Jhon Kei is a leader of one of the three capital thug groups. Jhon Kei has involved in 12 crimes registered by the police. It means that he is a citizen under a special attention of the police for his actions and criminal involvements.

Here I would like to see the thuggery phenomenon. How do we see it? Is it an Indonesian particular phenomenon or does it happen in other countries as well? Is it the problem of civilization or of the unemployment?

First of all, thuggery is not an Indonesian particular phenomenon. This occurs and exists also in other society. In the so called now developed countries, long before, this phenomenon happened and even until now. It means that thuggery is a global phenomenon.

Well, if the thuggery is a global phenomenon, my question, does it the problem of civilization? How do we clasiify the thuggery from the point of view of civilization? If we see thuggery as a crime phenomenon and crime as a lack of virtue and this in turn is seen as a lack of civilization, then we can conclude that the thuggery is a lack of civilization. But is it as simple as that? Does the civilization here mentioned refer to a society as a whole? Or does it refer to a particular group?

The category of civilization is always extended. It is a category of mental rather than spatial one. We hear for example the European civilization or the Chinese civilization etc. We never heard people say 'it is his personal civilization', they say on the contrary that 'it is his habit or their habit'.

This itinerary leads us to the conclusion that thuggery is the problem of personal/ group habit and mentality. Thus such gang of thugs leaded by as Jhon Kei, Hercules etc appear as a sign of personal/ group mental and habit problem rather than a problem of civilization.
